A small fire at Walmart in Twin Falls yesterday afternoon caused the store to be evacuated.  The Twin Falls fire department was called to the scene just after 3.  When they arrived, they found that an employee and put out the fire using an extinguisher and a kitchen hood fire suppression system.  The fire was contained to the deli’s fryer area.  The store reopened just before 4.

One of the biggest political battles in Idaho is playing out over the state’s Prop 1.  It’s a ballot measure to end the Republican party’s closed Primary and institute ranked choice voting in general elections.  Proponents say it will lead to more representative government, and to candidates with broader appeal winning races. Opponents say it will confuse voters or reduce the power Republicans have over Idaho politics.  So far nearly a million dollars has been spent in advertising between the two sides.

Yesterday morning, Twin Falls Sheriff deputies investigated an accident involving a semi-truck and a van.  According to social media posted by the sheriff’s office, the accident involved a hazmat spill.  It happened at 3800 East and 3200 North.  A photo on the Sheriff’s Facebook page indicated the semi-truck struck the side of the van. The van was loaded with lawn care chemicals. 

The Shoshone Falls grade and Dierkes lake park in Twin Falls is closed.  Crews are making road improvements.  There is no public access and all facilities are closed during the re-construction.

The Idaho Commission of Pardons and Parole denied Idaho’s longest-serving death row inmate Thomas Creech’s latest request for a clemency hearing.  This week, the commission voted five to one, denying the hearing, and one member recused themselves.

The wild horses gathered from burned Idaho rangelands in the Sands Basin and Four Mile Herd Management Areas will be available for public viewing at the Bureau of Land Management Boise Wild Horse Off-Range Corral on Pleasant Valley Road on Nov. 2, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  There were 74 wild horses gathered from BLM-managed public rangelands burned by the Jump and Paddock fires in August 2024.

SPORTS

Tomorrow the College of Southern Idaho Women’s Basketball team hits the hardwood to start another season.  CSI finished 28-6 a season ago and claimed their fourth straight Region Championship.  They won a game at the NJCAA National Tournament before losing in the second round.

The Wendell boys’ soccer team has returned following their state playoff games in Post Falls.  With them, they had some hardware.  The first-place trophy for 4-A and the banner declaring the team champs for the season.  Cesar Murralles was the game winning goal scorer. 

Tomorrow, six Magic Valley volleyball teams are hoping to win in state tournament games.  The playoffs run tomorrow through Saturday.  This is the first year the tournament expanded to three days. Each team will play one match on Thursday, then the field will be pared down to four teams on Friday before the traditional Saturday championship session.  The 2A and 1A state tournaments will take place in the Magic Valley in Jerome and Canyon Ridge. It marks the first time the event has come to this area since 2020. The 5A and 6A state tournament will head to the Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls.
