Today’s Daily Briefing – 12/23/2024

Still no official update from Twin Falls police after a Twin Falls County deputy shot and killed a person at a home near Filer.  It happened last Thursday just before 5 pm.  Social media posts from area residents are showing a growing frustration into the shootings while many roomers are being posted.  Police say the critical incident task force is investigating lead by the Twin Falls Police department.

Two people one a Twin Falls resident will be spending time in federal prison for sex crimes against minor children.  37 year old Nicholas Baker of Twin Falls, 33 year old Rexanna Marie Johnston of Idaho Falls and 54 year old Dale Hensel of Rigby received sentence.  Baker will spend 24 years behind bars.  Johnston 25 years and Hensel will be sentenced in February.

With a record 119 million Americans dashing over the river and through the woods to visit friends and family for the holidays, gas prices are climbing again.  Today’s average price for a gallon of regular in the Gem State is $3.06, which is six cents more than a week ago, but nine cents less than a month ago and 24 cents less than a year ago.

The Idaho Division of Human Resources is recommending the Idaho Legislature approve salary increases of 4% or $1.25 per hour for all permanent state employees.  It was recommended the 4% salary increase included flexibility to distribute the funds for recruitment and retention.

According to the Boise Airport, the common influx of travelers is expected this week. The airport said the busiest travel days are anticipated to be today and Monday, Dec. 30. The times the airport could be busiest are 5-7 a.m. and 10 a.m.-12 p.m. The airport said if you are traveling on these days or during these times, it’s best to arrive at the airport early.

Parents in Twin Falls listen up.  Just a reminder with school out now, the city has always had a curfew for those 18 and younger.  City code says children are not allowed to be outside after 11 during and midnight Friday and Saturday nights.  Kids under the age of 16 years old cannot be outside past 10 p.m. during the week, and on Friday and Saturday, they have to be home before 10:59 p.m.  There is a $500 fine for those breaking the law. 

SPORTS

The Boise State Broncos have their Fiesta Bowl opponent after the first round of the College Football Playoff and their opponent is a team the program has never matched up with in the over 150-year history of college football.  That opponent is the sixth-seeded Penn State Nittany Lions who dominated SMU 38-10 at home on Saturday to punch a ticket to much warmer Arizona.

From the local high school hardwood over the weekend, first for boys basketball, on Friday, Hansen downed Castleford 68 to 45.   Owyhee JV’s said no to Gooding 67 to 49.  Rimrock downed Richfield 43 to 36.  Buhl defeated Wood River 51 to 34.  Jerome said no to Century 46 to 38.  Oakley defeated Hagerman 50 to 45.  Raft River said no to Lighthouse Christian 53 to 23.  Murtaugh came out on top over Shoshone 53 to 48. 

For the girls, Kimberly defeated Payette 69 to 38.  Parma said not tonight to Gooding 62 to 32.  Hagerman defeated Victory Charter 45 to 27.  Oakley downed Butte County 45 to 40.  Dietrich outlasted Glenns Ferry 60 to 40 and Buhl victors over Wood River 39 to 21. 

On Saturday for the boys, Sugar Salem outlasted the Filer Wildcats 64 to 23.  American Falls downed Kimberly 45 to 31.  It was Marsh Valley 50 Gooding 44.

For the Girls, Murtaugh defeated Liberty Charter 48 to 31.  Gooding Said not to Payette 63 to 55.  Marsing defeated Wendell 38 to 35. 

In mens college basketball, Behind Alvaro Cardenas’ career-high 12 assists, Boise State (9-3) beat Air Force (3-9), 77-59, on Saturday afternoon at ExtraMile Arena.  With the win, the Broncos improved to 6-0 at home and have won all six contests by double figures. Dating back to last season, the team has won 10 of its last 11 games at ExtraMile Arena.

Idaho vandal Men’s Basketball shot a season-high 58.7 percent from the field and made 15 threes to secure a wire-to-wire victory over Pacific, 95-72. The Vandals now head back to Moscow to begin Big Sky play in the new year. The Vandals will host reigning tournament champions Montana State on Thursday January 2 and Montana on Saturday January 4.

The Idaho State women’s basketball team wrapped up the 2024-25 non-conference schedule with a razor-thin loss to Northern Illinois, 51-50, in overtime Friday afternoon. The game started with a back and forth battle between the Huskies and the Bengals. Halle Wright took control of the game early for ISU scoring eight points in the first four minutes of the game with two made three pointers and a layup. The first quarter ended with a slim 15-14 lead for the Huskies. ISU gets two weeks off before starting Big Sky play at home, Jan. 2 vs. N. Arizona and Jan. 4 vs. N. Colorado.
