Three Idaho U.S. Senate candidates debated tariffs, immigration and federal spending in Caldwell last night. Todd Achilles, Natalie Fleming and Matt Loesby participated. Senator Jim Risch declined, with his campaign questioning the forum’s impartiality. Organizers disputed that concern.
🏫 SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT DEBATE
Idaho schools superintendent Debbie Critchfield has withdrawn from the October twelfth KTVB debate, saying all three candidates should participate. KTVB says the third candidate didn’t meet its fundraising requirement. Challenger Becky Sundin Mitchell says she’s disappointed and remains ready to debate.
🚒 ROCK CREEK FIRE LEVY
Rock Creek fire district voters will consider a two-year levy renewal November third. It would raise one-point-three million dollars annually for staffing and equipment. The estimated yearly cost: seventy-eight dollars and thirty-two cents per hundred-thousand dollars in taxable value—four dollars below the current levy.

Want to serve on the Twin Falls City Council? Applications are open at T-F-I-D dot org until four p.m. October sixteenth. Applicants must be qualified city voters. Selected candidates will speak November second, with appointment votes expected November ninth.

🚙 FATAL CALDWELL CRASH
A Texas man died after his Jeep overturned and caught fire in Caldwell early yesterday. Idaho State Police say the 39-year-old from Elgin missed a curve on Muller Drive around two-twenty a.m. The road was blocked for about five hours.
💧 AIRPORT WELL PFAS
PFAS chemicals tested above federal drinking water limits in a Magic Valley Regional Airport well. That’s the airport’s water, separate from Twin Falls’ city system. The city plans to install filters while working on a longer-term solution.
🤖 NAMPA POLICE AI REPORTS
Nampa police are using artificial intelligence to draft reports, saying it cuts paperwork time. Officers dictate what happened, then review each draft for accuracy. Boise attorney Kurt Holzer cautions that changes to an officer’s account could create problems in court.

🏫 BURLEY HIGH SCHOOL PAVING
Paving will affect access to Burley High School tomorrow. The school says cars cannot enter campus from eight until three while crews pave Parke Avenue. Monday, drivers must approach from the north, using Main Street or Sixteenth Street. Watch for crews and trucks.

Idaho students can name a snowplow starting today. ITD’s annual contest is open through October to grades six through twelve, including homeschoolers. Twelve winning names will go on plows statewide, and winning classrooms get a visit from their plow and driver.

Magic Valley football players are making their mark through five weeks! Jerome’s Benjamin Landrian leads the eleven-man passing rankings with 1,591 yards and 20 touchdowns. Teammate Taiten Van Tassell tops receiving with 701 yards and eight scores. In eight-man football, Hagerman’s Adam Nelson leads with twelve-and-a-half sacks, while Carey’s Madden Perkes ranks sixth in rushing with 722 yards. On defense, Burley’s Marcus Armstrong ranks second in eleven-man interceptions with five, and Buhl’s Maddox Price is third in sacks with six-and-a-half.
