🗳️ BALLOT MEASURES

Idaho voters will decide two proposed constitutional amendments this November. One would give only the Legislature authority to legalize marijuana and other narcotics. The other would make English the official language in Idaho’s Constitution. Ballot language was approved yesterday despite objections from Democratic lawmakers.

🌊 TETON DAM FAILURE ANNIVERSARY

Fifty years ago today, June 5th, 1976, the catastrophic Teton Dam Failure changed eastern Idaho forever. The collapse of the Teton Dam unleashed billions of gallons of water through the Snake River Plain, claiming 11 lives, forcing thousands from their homes, and causing an estimated $2 billion in damage.

🚨 SERIOUS CRASHES

Idaho State Police responded to three serious crashes Wednesday. In Twin Falls County, two drivers were hospitalized after a car ran a stop sign and struck a hay-stacker truck. Near Gooding, an 18-year-old Shoshone man remains in critical condition after crashing into a turning semi. And east of Burley, a semi driver escaped injury after overturning on Interstate 86.

💧 WATER AND IRRIGATION

The Idaho Department of Water Resources is warning thousands of water-right holders about possible curtailments as Snake River flows continue to drop. Some Magic Valley farmers say they have only days of irrigation water remaining and are leaving fields unplanted.

Congressman Mike Simpson has announced more than $13 million in federal funding for Idaho water projects. The cities of Rupert and Twin Falls are among the communities set to benefit from upgrades aimed at improving drinking water and infrastructure reliability.

🌱 FARMING AND WEED CONTROL

As crops emerge across southern Idaho, farmers are battling weeds that compete for water and nutrients. University of Idaho experts say drought conditions are making weed control more difficult, prompting some growers to explore new technologies like laser weeders and electric weed zappers.

✈️ TWIN FALLS AIRPORT

The Twin Falls Airport is investing $1.8 million to rehabilitate a general aviation ramp. The project is expected to wrap up by the end of June.

🔥 WILDFIRE RESPONSE

The Twin Falls Tanker Base opened three weeks early this year due to increased wildfire activity. Crews have already used 15,000 gallons of retardant, and officials remind residents that 85 percent.

🏫 SCHOOL CALENDAR

The Pocatello-Chubbuck School District is exploring possible calendar changes, including a four-day school week. School board members have formed a committee to study options.

🐄 DAIRY PROCESSING

Actus Nutrition is expanding its dairy protein production through a new strategic partnership with Darigold, with Jerome, Idaho playing a central role. Actus will take ownership of Darigold’s Jerome plant, continue producing nonfat dry milk, and invest in upgrades to make higher-value dairy proteins. This will become Actus’ second facility in Jerome, strengthening the city’s place in the regional dairy processing industry. The agreement also includes Darigold supplying Actus with whey products from its Sunnyside, Washington plant under a long-term arrangement.

⚾ MINICO STORM 14U

The Minico Storm 14U is off to another strong start in its quest for a fourth straight American Legion B state title. The Storm picked up a pair of wins over rival Burley yesterday, winning 18-7 in game one behind big performances from Jack Hurst and Kam Hernandez. Head coach Casey Jensen says he’s coached this group since they were nine years old. Minico improved to 6-and-2 on the season and hosts Wendell Monday for a doubleheader. Meanwhile, Burley heads to Twin Falls tomorrow to take on the Redhawks.

🥎 ALL-CONFERENCE SOFTBALL

The South East Idaho Conference has announced its all-conference softball teams, and Wendell and Declo are well represented. Wendell senior Breanna Comstock was named Player of the Year after blasting a conference-best 11 home runs and piling up 223 strikeouts in the circle. Teammate Sophie Mattix joined her on the first team. Declo also landed two first-team selections with Amerie Ewell and Teagan Wickel earning honors. The Hornets added three second-team picks, while Wendell seniors Audra Bunn and Annabelle McRoberts were also recognized.

🏟️ BOISE STATE VENUE UPGRADES

As Boise State prepares to welcome more than 20,000 fans for Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live this weekend, university leaders are also looking toward the future of Albertsons Stadium. A feasibility study is underway to explore upgrades at both Albertsons Stadium and ExtraMile Arena. Proposed improvements include expanding seating on the east side, widening concourses, and upgrading restrooms and concessions to improve the fan experience. Boise State hopes the enhancements will help the venues host more major events year-round. Recommendations from the study are expected by the end of the summer.
