💻 JEROME SCHOOLS — CYBERATTACK CANCELS MONDAY CLASSES
A cyberattack has canceled classes across the Jerome School District today. All students will stay home this Monday, October 19, while technology teams work to restore the district’s network.
In a message to families, Brent Johnson says the attack targeted the district’s technology infrastructure over the weekend. The district says existing security measures helped its team quickly isolate the disruption, and student data, Chromebooks and laptops remain secure.
Staff devices are undergoing security checks before being brought back online. District technology staff and cybersecurity experts are working to restore and verify the network while helping authorities investigate.
The district acknowledges the disruption for families and says it will provide updates about the school schedule for the rest of the week as information becomes available.
💧 TWIN FALLS AIRPORT — FILTERS INSTALLED AFTER PFAS FINDINGS
New drinking water filters are in place at the Magic Valley Regional Airport after testing found 2 PFAS chemicals above federal limits in an airport well. The results apply only to the airport’s water supply—not the broader Twin Falls city water system.
An August 26 sample measured PFOA at 9.83 parts per trillion and PFOS at 5.35. The federal limit is 4 parts per trillion for each.
The city says filters have been installed at airport drinking water sources, including the Happy Landing restaurant and drinking fountains, to bring those levels below the limits. Officials are also exploring alternative well sites.
The airport distributed its consumer notice September 22. The city says it is sharing the findings ahead of federal compliance deadlines. A single sample above the limits does not, by itself, establish a regulatory violation.
🔥 FILER FIRE — VOLLEYBALL ACADEMY LOSES PRACTICE SPACE
A Saturday morning fire has left a local volleyball club searching for a new place to practice after flames heavily damaged S and G Customs and destroyed the Southern Idaho Volleyball Academy’s training space.
Filer firefighters responded around 5 a.m. to 2500 East, 3894 North, finding about a third of the commercial building engulfed in flames. Twin Falls and Buhl crews helped bring the fire under control in about 90 minutes. Firefighters remained on scene for roughly 4½ hours. No injuries were reported.
SIVA club director Andria Parker says the academy rented about 7,000 square feet inside the warehouse. The club lost volleyballs, carts, poles, nets and clothing, along with its practice facility.
The club’s season starts in January, but its fall academy was scheduled to begin October 27. Staff are now looking for available gym space to keep athletes playing.
Other volleyball organizations have offered to donate supplies, and Parker says the community’s support has meant a great deal.
🔥 MELBA AND NAMPA — SATURDAY FIRES BURN ACREAGE AND PROPERTY
Two Saturday fires burned thousands of acres near Melba and destroyed property in southeast Nampa.
The Smore Fire, east of Swan Falls near Melba, burned 2,115 acres before being extinguished Sunday morning, according to WildCAD. It started around 11 a.m. Saturday. The Western Fire Chiefs Association lists the fire as human-caused. No evacuations were in effect.
In southeast Nampa, a separate fire burned about 2 acres near Diane Street and Wright Lane, destroying multiple outbuildings and vehicles. The Nampa Fire Protection District says no injuries were reported. That fire remains under investigation.
🚧 GOODING COUNTY — RICHFIELD MAN INJURED IN SEMI CRASH
A 73-year-old Richfield man was flown to a hospital after a semi struck his pickup and horse trailer Friday afternoon in Gooding County.
Idaho State Police say the crash happened around 12:51 on State Highway 46 near milepost 108. Both vehicles were headed south when the pickup driver began turning left into a veterinary office. Troopers say the semi’s driver, an 18-year-old Burley man, swerved to avoid stopped traffic and hit the pickup.
The pickup driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The semi driver was buckled up. The injured man’s condition was not released.
The highway was blocked for about 5 hours. State Police are investigating.
🗳️ IDAHO ELECTION — NO KINGS PROTESTS AND EARLY VOTING
Protesters across Idaho took their message from the streets to the ballot box Saturday, urging people to vote ahead of the November 3 election. No Kings demonstrations were held in Boise, Twin Falls and other communities as part of nationwide protests.
At the Boise event, speakers encouraged people to volunteer with campaigns and talk with neighbors about candidates and ballot issues. Participants cited concerns about the Trump administration, abortion restrictions, education funding and climate change.
Early voting opens today in many Idaho counties and runs through October 30. Availability and hours vary by county, so check with your county clerk.
The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5 p.m. Friday, October 23. Election Day polls will be open November 3 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters can find their polling location at VoteIdaho.gov.
🔔 STATE CAPITOL — LIBERTY BELL RETURN AND FOUNTAIN PROPOSAL
Idaho’s refurbished Liberty Bell replica is heading back to the State Capitol after a tour through all 44 counties. A free, public rededication ceremony is set for noon November 23 in Boise, when the bell will be reinstalled on the Capitol’s front steps.
The bell was sent to South Carolina in January for restoration as part of America250 celebrations. It returned in July before traveling statewide, giving students and the public a chance to see and ring it. An advisory council approved spending up to $28,500 on the work.
Meanwhile, State Treasurer Julie Ellsworth is proposing a liberty fountain as a permanent America250 landmark. She estimates it would cost $1 million and is encouraging fundraising to pay for it.
No location has been announced, and the advisory council has taken no action on the proposal. Members asked Ellsworth to gauge support and report back at their next meeting, tentatively scheduled for December 10.
