Initial enrollment numbers are in for K-12 schools across the state, showing that Idaho’s school-aged population has increased by just 0.3%, or about 1,000 students.  That’s comparatively low; for years, Idaho’s annual enrollment growth hovered around 1.3%, until it dropped by 1.6% at the pandemic’s height in the 2020-2021 school year. That was the state’s first enrollment drop in 30 years.  Charter schools boast 700 new students due in part to four new schools this year. Still, nearly half of all existing charters show declines.

Four companies that developed solar energy facilities in Alabama, Idaho and Illinois have agreed to pay a total of $1.3 million for violating construction permits and rules for handling groundwater.  The government alleged companies failed to take steps to control runoff water.  One of the cases involved American Falls Solar LLC, which owned a site near American Falls.

CSI is recognizing former Board member LeRoy Craig by naming the college’s new location in Jerome in his honor.  The 20,000 square foot facility, which is to be constructed on the corner of Third and Lincoln in Jerome, will significantly expand CSI’s presence and will officially be known as the LeRoy Craig Jerome Center.

A Blaine County man is behind bars after Blaine deputies charged him with illegally using a debit card at 17 businesses. 42 year old Carl Rudy Geissler, of Hailey, allegedly charged over 5-thousand dollars.  He is facing Grand Theft, Possession of a financial card and possession of a controlled substance.

Autopsies performed on four University of Idaho students who were found dead inside a rental house near campus showed that all four were stabbed to death, according to the Latah County coroner.  Police continue to search for those responsible. Students are going home early out of fear. Some parking lots of fraternities and sororities are nearly empty. Many classes are cancelled.

No trial split.  The judge in the Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell murder case said the couple’s trial will be heard at the same time and same courtroom.  Prosecutors are seeking the death sentence.

SPORTS

This weekend championship playoffs for state football is happening.

For the CLASS 2A game yesterday at Holt Arena, Firth Bear Lake it was Bear Lake taking the win 14 to 6.

In CLASS 1AD1 yesterday at Holt arena Grace took on the #1 ranked Oakley hornets, it was Oakley with the win and taking the championship trophy home with a score of 58 to 20.

For Class 5A, Rigby plays Meridian at Albertsons Stadium at 7 pm tonight.  Amazingly, every single No. 1 overall seed has advanced to the championship round this weekend, including undefeated Meridian, who steamrolled upstart Mountain View 34-10 in the semifinals.

In class 4A Skyline will Play Bishop Kelly at Holt Arena 8:30 pm tonight.  Like the 5A finals, the 4A State Championship Game features a defending champion entering as an underdog against an undefeated No. 1 seed.  Fortunately for second-seeded Skyline, however, is that they will get a "home-field advantage" with the game being played in East Idaho at Idaho State's Holt Arena, as opposed to having to make a trip to the Treasure Valley.

In Class 3A action at 1 pm tomorrow, Homedale plays Sugar Salem at Middleton High School.  While every state championship game this weekend obviously means a lot for the teams competing, possibly no squad has more motivation to win — and get the monkey off their back — than Homedale.  The Trojans will get yet another shot to fend off archnemesis Sugar-Salem and pick up their first state title since 1997.   This will be the fifth straight season with a Homedale-Sugar-Salem clash in the late rounds of the 3A state playoffs.

In Class 1AD2 Dietrich will take on Kentrick at Holt Arena tonight at 6.  Dietrich and Kendrick have seemingly been on a collision course all season as both the Blue Devils and Tigers have racked up one impressive and dominating victory after another.  Dietrich scores nearly 59 points per contest and has put up less than 54 points only once this season. Kendrick allows less than six points per game and has allowed more than 8 point on only one occasion this year.

In college basketball, Utah Tech will look to end its three-game road losing streak when the Trailblazers play Idaho.  The game is set for tomorrow at 5 in Moscow.
