The Biden administration has filed its first legal challenge to a state abortion ban since the end of Roe v. Wade, arguing Idaho’s restrictive abortion law leaves doctors facing criminal penalties for providing abortion-related medical care to women in life-threatening medical situations.  The Justice Department may have a strong argument in the Idaho case, but even if they win it wouldn’t allow full access to abortion, legal experts say. It could, though, give doctors more latitude to provide an abortion in an emergency.

Idaho House Speaker Scott Bedke was named the president of the National Conference of State Legislatures yesterday at the Legislative Summit in Denver, Colorado. He is the 49th president of the national conference, a bipartisan group that provides research and opportunities for policymakers.

In Legion Baseball, the Minico Storm is in Vernal, Utah today for the Northwest Class A Regional Tournament.  The Storm beat last year’s regional winner, Marsh Valley, in this year’s state championship game.  They will play Wyoming tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the first round of the double-elimination tournament

High school football returns in a few weeks so today we start our series to preview school programs.  First for Burley.  Cameron Anderson is starting his first season as head coach.  Andersen just finished his 14th season at Gooding with a semifinal appearance, and the move was unexpected to many. There’s no denying that excitement at Burley is at an all-time high, but Andersen understands that the Bobcats face an uphill climb.

In Jerome, Sid Gambles returns for his 11th season as head coach.  The 2021 Jerome Tigers football season can be summed up in one word: depth, or a lack thereof. A season that started with high hopes and expectations was quickly derailed by a series of injuries to several prominent players. A roster already stretched thin hit its breaking point, and the Tigers limped their way to a 3-6 finish.   So it’s no surprise that veteran coach Sid Gambles has improving depth at the top of his list when it comes to improving in 2022. Other factors he listed included running the ball more consistently on offense, and creating more turnovers on defense.
