As we near May 17th when voters will go to the polls, we continue looking at some areas of the Magic Valley.  Elections for the County Commissioner in the second and third district are on the ballot in Minidoka County.  In the second district, Dan Schaeffer will run against Kent McClellan.  In the third district, Jared Berkeley Orton will run unopposed.  Voters will also elect a sheriff. Carl Eric Owen and David C. Pinther will run against one another.

An Idaho hospital that went on lockdown in March after far-right activists protested outside is suing Ammon Bundy, Diego Rodriguez and their various political organizations for defamation and “sustained online attacks.”  Diego Rodriguez is the grandfather of the child involved in the protection case.  The child protection case involved a 10-month-old baby who was temporarily removed from family custody in March after officials determined the infant was “suffering from severe malnourishment

The Nampa school board has permanently banned 22 popular books from the district’s libraries.  The Nampa School Board made the vote on Monday, after the books were brought to the attention of the district over accusations that they contain “pornography.” But some of the books are rated as having little or no sexual content by Common Sense Media, an organization that provides age-based ratings for books, movies and video games.

It’s no secret that PAC’s or Political Action Committees are influencing Idaho’s May 17th Primary.  Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been donated through difficult to trace sources this election cycle and it’s not expected to change. 

The Hailey City Council has approved short-term RV housing options for the second time in as many years.  The move will allow residents to live in the RV’s for six months instead of 30 days.  The RV must be located on private property and may not be located within City rights-of-way.

The BLM is seeking input from the public on a proposed 10-year management plan for wild horses in areas located along the Owyhee Foothills.  The action they say, is needed to reduce impacts to rangeland health and wildlife habitat within the herd management area boundaries and to protect animal and herd health.  

SPORTS

In local sports, to the softball fields where Number 5 ranked Burley took the win from number 7th ranked Minico 15 to 5.  The Spartans are eliminated from contention. The Bobcats now face the No. 3 Wolverines at Twin Falls on today at 3 p.m. in another loser-out game. The winner faces No. 1 Twin Falls at 5 p.m.

Number 2 ranked Filer downed Number 3 ranked Buhl 15 to 5.  That means Filer is up for the District IV softball championship as they head back to the 3A state tournament where they look to defend their title

Declo defeated Wendell 15 to 5.  The Trojans are eliminated from contention. The Hornets, meanwhile, advance to the 2A play-in game on Saturday at OK Ward Park in Pocatello against Bear Lake for a 3 p.m. start.

Boise State has received national honors for their softball program. The school was nationally ranked in at least one poll for six-straight weeks, March 8-April 5, 2022.  The Broncos were No. 23 in Extra Inning Softball's poll, March 29, the highest ranking in school history.  The Broncos are No. 44 and is the highest ranked team in the Mountain West.
