Ten states that struggled to pay the mounting costs of rising unemployment compensation claims during the COVID-19 pandemic will face yet another challenge: interest accruing on federal loans they relied on to cover payments to the unemployed.  Colorado, Minnesota, New Jersey and Pennsylvania owe the federal government more than $52 billion.  Idaho is not one of the states.

Idaho public health leaders announced yesterday that they activated “crisis standards of care” allowing health care rationing for the state’s northern hospitals because there are more coronavirus patients than the institutions can handle.  Idaho has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the U.S.

Teachers in the Twin Falls School District spent yesterday evaluating students’ scores to determine where they are from their educational goals.  They determined that the pandemic created many obstacles for students, resulting in varied test scores for many returning to the classroom.

A Nampa man pleaded guilty Tuesday to assaulting police in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.  67 year old Duke Edward Wilson admitted to hitting at least one U.S. Capitol officer with his fist, as well as hitting at least one officer with a pole.

James Graff of Murtaugh made an easy 150-thousand dollars after his powerball ticket came back a winner.  Graff’s ticket also had PowerPlay, which turned his $50,000 winner into $150,000.  The estimated jackpot for tonight’s Powerball draw is $388 million.

Nolverto Jorge Casas-Inga of Malta has been sentenced to 18 months in Prison.  He pleaded guilty to aggravated Battery with the use of a deadly weapon with what authority’s day was attempted murder after a birthday party stabbing.

The Mountain Home School District will mask up for the next three weeks as COVID-19 cases are on the rise. The school board voted 3-2 at a special meeting of the Board of Trustees last night after about an hour of discussion on the subject.


Over the weekend, the Century girls soccer team didn’t have to much of a hassle with Burley this last Saturday, winning 6-0. Today the Lady Bobcats face off with Mountain Home’s Lady Tigers in Bobcat territory with game time at 4:30pm.. hopefully they’ll bring home the win.   And then the Bobcats will take on the Lady Bruins on the soccer field this Saturday at 11am and Wood River next Wednesday the 15th.

Meanwhile, the lady Declo hornets lost last night to the Buhl Lady Indians 8 to 1.  Declo will face off with Bliss this Thursday at 4:30 while Buhl will take on Filer this Thursday also at 4:30pm. The Jerome Lady Tigers have a by week and will head to the field on the 15th against Canyon Ridge.

For the Boys, Filer took the Game over Wendell 3 to 2.  It  was Buhl over Declo 6 to 0 and Bliss Downed Kimberly 4 to 1.  The Sun Valley Community School outlasted Gooding 10 to 0.  On today’s schedule Wood River will be at Canyon Ridge and Twin Falls travels to Minico. 

Gonzaga basketball coach Mark Few has been cited for driving under the influence and said he exhibited “poor judgement” operating a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol.  Gonzaga athletic director Chris Standiford released a statement earlier Tuesday saying the school was aware of Few’s situation.

Following a seven-point win over Twin Falls, Pocatello moved to 2-0 and jumped up a spot to No. 3 in the latest Idaho High School Football Media Poll.  Elsewhere, Minico is fifth in the Class 4-A.  In Class 3A Gooding is ranked 3rd.  In Class 2A Declo is in 3rd place.  Oakley is ranked 1st in Class 1A Division 1 while Raft River is in 3rd.  Carey dominates the Class 1A division 2 while Dietrich comes in 2nd. 

BYU represents one of four schools that could be joining the Big 12.  Sports Illustrated reported last Friday that the Cougars, as well as Cincinnati, Houston and UCF are expected to apply for membership this week.

The Boise State Bronco’s opens the home portion of its 2021 schedule against UTEP this Friday.  Game time is 7:30pm.  Boise State is 0 and 1 for the season while UTEP has 2 wins and no losses.   

In some local volleyball games yesterday, Lighthouse Christian took the win from Watersprings 3 to 1.  Wood River shut out Minico 3 to 0 same for Kimberly taking the win from Gooding 3 to 0.  Raft River took the win from Wendell 3 to 0 and Burley did the same thing for Mountain Home.  Richfield and Filer took the wins over Dietrich and Buhl and it was Castleford 3 Hansen 2.
