Bureau of land management firefighters say they have gained the upper hand in a wildfire that has destroyed 2 homes and burned 25-hundred acres south of American Falls.  The Cold Creek fire was reported on Monday afternoon.  Several areas were evacuated and residents were sent to the American Falls High school for shelter.

Idaho officials on Tuesday approved payments of $1.4 million and $1.2 million to two men who spent decades in prison for crimes they didn’t commit.  Gov. Brad Little and three other statewide-elected members of the Idaho Board of Examiners approved the payments to Charles Fain and Christopher Tapp.  Fain, who is getting $1.4 million, was convicted of kidnapping, rape and murder in 1983 following the death of 9-year-old Daralyn Johnson. In 1984 he was sentenced to death. He came within four days of being executed at one point.

A Jerome woman was sent to the hospital after being struck by a pickup truck late Monday night.  Police say the accident happened at the intersection of North Lincoln Avenue and Mountain View Drive in Jerome around 10:30 pm.  43 year old Wendy Marzitelli was life Flighted to Boise. 

Unemployed Idaho residents could get kicked out of a state benefits program if they don’t follow new job-seeking requirements that went into effect this month.  People receiving unemployment benefits now have two business days to apply for a job opening after receiving a referral from the Idaho Department of Labor. If they don’t, they could lose their unemployment benefits.

Twin Falls Police Chief Craig Kingsbury hopes to add four police officers to his force.  This week the city council told Kingbury he could apply for a grant from the U.S. Department of justice that would cover most of the costs associated with the new officers for three years. 

Idaho governor Brad Little has joined with western governors to expand access to affordable degree programs for Idahoans who need additional education.  He is targeting 165-thousand residents who have some college but no degree. 

SPORTS

Monday night basketball players from several states were in town for a high school showcase.  The event was hosted by the College of Southern Idaho.  The athletes displayed their talent with six college scouts in attendance.  The boys were 9th graders to post graduates.  Blue Mountain Community College, The college of Idaho, Eastern Oregon University, Montana Western and Utah State were all represented.

A Utah teen who was stomped by a bull at the Idaho High School Rodeo Association State Finals in Pocatello over the weekend is recovering well.  17 year old Brock Hansen of Hyrum, Utah was hired to be a “cowboy protector” for the competition in Pocatello.  Cowboy protectors are tasked with grabbing bulls by the head and directing them to run away from fallen cowboys.  Hansen who is among the nation's top freestyle bullfighters in his age group and hopes to go pro  lost his footing on loose dirt Saturday while grappling with a bull named “Microbrew.” He could not roll away before the bull stomped with full force on his back.  The blow broke the wing of a vertebrae in Hansen's lower back. Hansen's strong back muscles held his spine in place, however, and doctors expect he will make a full recovery.
