The trial of Lori Vallow Daybell was cut short yesterday at the request of the state due to a death in the family of a lead prosecutor.  Police were testifying all morning -- three witnesses were called. The trial will resume this morning.  On Tuesday, Rexburg Police Detective Ray Hermosillo gave graphic, haunting testimony about finding the children's bodies and the excavation process to be able to lay them to rest.

A 36-year-old Idaho Falls man who was wanted for eluding law enforcement, kidnapping, and aggravated assault was shot by police following a chase and crash.  Blackfoot Police located the suspect's vehicle yesterday just after noon.  Authorities say he drove away from police which began the prusuit. He crashed his vehicle on the ramp connecting U.S. 91 and southbound Interstate 15. Police said they fired multiple shots at the man and struck him.

Several hundred people rallied against plans for a large-scale wind energy project in southern Idaho, hoping to convince federal agencies to reject the proposal by Magic Valley Energy. If built, the wind farm would be the second-largest in the U.S., producing up to 1,000 megavolts. The Biden Administration has prioritized permitting 25 gigawatts of renewable energy projects on public lands by 2025 as part of its response to climate change. The company hopes to have the wind farm operating by 2025.

No more masks at St. Lukes medical centers in Southern Idaho.  Yesterday the hospital updated its universal mask mandate.  The Mandate went into effect April 3, 2020 because of COVID 19.

Yesterday morning, Boise School District announced they'd be banning and disabling the TikTok app on all school devices and from all school WiFi networks.  This comes after the Idaho legislature upheld the Governor's executive order that banned the app.

The DMV has started issuing Driver's Licenses with the new design.  The Idaho Transportation Department said the new design was launched yesterday.  Idaho’s state bird, the mountain bluebird, is featured prominently. Idahoans will also notice the Sawtooth Mountains and the Idaho Statehouse.

SPORTS

While Major League Baseball has no current plans to add teams, the family that used to own the NBA’s Utah Jazz says it wants an expansion franchise.  The Miller family and the Larry H. Miller Company said yesterday a coalition calling itself Big League Utah has targeted a site for a ballpark at the 100-acre Rocky Mountain Power District on Salt Lake City’s west side.  MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has said repeatedly that he doesn’t envision expansion until after the Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland Athletic s get new ballparks but would like to eventually add two teams to reach 32. Baseball last expanded in 1998, adding teams in Phoenix and St. Petersburg, Florida.  The Miller family bought a share of the Jazz in 1985 and sold the team in December 2020.

In local high school softball action yesterday there is one game.  Declo downed Firth 11 to 1.  On today’s schedule, it’s the wooden bat tournament in Glenns Ferry and Wendell.  Locally, Glenns Ferry Declo and Gooding will participate.  It starts at 2 with Glenns Ferry playing Challis Mackey.  Then Wells Nevada takes on Gooding and Declo will play Soda Springs at 7.  Elsewhere Twin Falls heads cross town to play Canyon Ridge.  There is a double header with Filer traveling to Buhl.

On the softball schedule, It’s the Glenns Ferry Tournament in Glenns Ferry and Wendell.  At 10 Wendell Plays Bear Lake.  That moves to Glenns Ferry with the first game where Glenns Ferry will play Greenleaf Friends.  Then Glenns Ferry plays Challis Mackey in Wendell.   At 5 Wendell plays North Fremont.

Elsewhere Twin Falls plays Canyon Ridge, and there are three double headers on the schedule.  Gooding goes to Buhl, Marsh Valley travels to Minico and Burley to Wood River.

As the trial for Murder Suspect Lori Vallow Daybell moves forward in Boise, attorneys yesterday asked if Daybell could be excused from the courtroom.  She was told no.  The jury was shown gruesome photos of the remains of the children that were found on property owned by Lori’s husband Chad.  Police say when police discovered a small body wrapped in plastic trash bags he left at a high rate of speed.  He was taken into custody soon afterwards.

Authorities say Autopsies are planned for the two bodies found floating face down in a private room of Miracle Hot Springs Monday afternoon.  The couple in their 80s was from Filer police say.

Idaho drivers haven’t experienced the recent rise in gas prices that is sweeping across the country, but that could all change soon.  According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular in the Gem State is $3.54, which is the same as a week ago and 14 cents less than a month ago.  Meanwhile, the national average currently sits at $3.60 per gallon, which is nine cents more than a week ago.

Idaho School superintendent Debbie Chritchfield and officials from the state department of education will be touring the state.  They plan to meet with local school districts and charter school leaders to discuss how changes approved during the legislative session will affect their schools.

Right now, the Twin Falls Mayor is selected by the city council.  Resident Arnel Culum wants to see that choice go before voters.  He is starting a petition to have residents vote whether the position should appear on the ballot.  He introduced his petition to the city council this week.

Meteorologists say warm temperatures are causing increased snowmelt which means rivers and streams are running high.  That means residents could see some minor flooding this week. 

Idaho Falls resident Jake Eilander is again standing trial for murder after his original trial was canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak.  The 37 year old was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder after allegedly shooting and killing a man behind Planet Fitness in Idaho Falls. He started a trial in November 2022, but that was vacated after he and several court personnel became sick. The trial was ultimately rescheduled to start this week.

SPORTS

The College of Southern Idaho’s baseball team finished eight games in five days against Utah State University Eastern with a pair of wins yesterday at Skip Walker Field.  The Golden Eagles won 1-0 and 4-3 to close out the full series with a four-game split.

In local High School Baseball games yesterday, Canyon Ridge defeated Wood River 10 to 9.  Twin Falls topped Jerome 15 to 4.  Minico said no to Mountain Home 6 to 5.  It was American Falls 11 Declo 1.  Kimberly defeating Snake River 12 to 6.  In a double header Buhl shut out Gooding 16 to 0 in the first game.  Then another shutout in the second game 20 to 0.

In softball play, Twin Falls over Jerome 6 to 5.  It was Wood River 12 Canyon Ridge 4.  In some double headers, Burley took the win in both games over Mountain Home 11 to 1 and 15 to 5.  Buhl took both of their games over Filer 16 to 6 and 13 to 3.  Kimberly topped Gooding 5 to 0 and 11 to 1.  Glenns Ferry outlasted Greenlea Friends 15 to  7.

There is one softball game scheduled for today.  Declo will  travel to Firth.

A portion of State highway 50 that crosses over Interstate 84 near Eden is closed until about 7:30 this morning.  Crews are removing an overhead sign that is attached to the bridge.  The work began last night.  Motorists will need to take an alternate route.

With the temperatures warming meteorologists are warning that the snow will be melting quicker in the higher elevations.  They are warning residents that levels will increase in Area Rivers and streams.  No flooding is expected yet.  Due to the extensive snowpack lingering in the South Hills area south of Twin Falls, the BLM will extend the seasonal motorized travel closure to Friday, April 28.

Two people died in separate motorcycle accidents yesterday.  21 year old James Hollon was southbound north of Buhl out of Melon Valley around 1 pm when he lost control.  He died at the scene.  Then near Heyburn just after 3 ISP investigated a crash when an eastbound motorcycle missed a curve killing the driver.

Amanda Dunlap was sentenced to 10 years indeterminate in the death of her 20 month old daughter Lyryk Altom.  The baby died of Blunt Force Trauma.  Her boyfriend Josh Molina was sentenced to life in prison for the murder.

One person is dead and an Ada County sheriff Deputy is recovering from injuries following a confrontation on I-84 yesterday morning.  It started around 2 am when 40 year old Jared Decker of Boise didn’t listen to commands.  It’s alleged that Decker stabbed a deputy multiple times.  The suspect was then shot by two other deputies.  Most of the morning the eastbound area of the freeway was closed for the investigation. 

A man and a woman died in a private room at Miracle Hot Springs near Hagerman yesterday.  Authorities say the two were in their 60’s and were found face down in the water. 

Twin Falls High School Principal Ryan Nesmith was named associate superintendent of the district.  He started as a science and Spanish teacher in 2009 working for the Kimberly school district.  He will replace Bill Brulotte who is retiring.

In sports from high school baseball yesterday, Declo defeated Firth 4 to 3 and in a double header Marsh Valley took the first game over Burley 13 to 0 then Burley turned it around taking the second game 13 to 10.

In Softball, Century took both games of a double header against Minico.  Game one 6 to 1 and in Game two 17 to 10.

On today’s baseball schedule, Kimberly plays Snake River, Wood River travels to Canyon Ridge, Mountain Home goes to Minico, Twin Falls crosses the bridge to play Jerome.  Gem State goes to Glenns Ferry, Greenleaf friends also travels to Glenns Ferry.  Declo goes to American Falls and Gooding heads to Buhl for a double header. 

As for softball games, Twin Falls travels to Jerome, Wood River goes to Canyon Ridge, Glenns Ferry to Greenleaf Friends and Lighthouse Christian goes to Notus.  There are three Double Headers on the schedule.  Mountain Home goes to Burley, Filer travels to Buhl, and Gooding heads to Kimberly. 

For Golf, Declo and Carey will be at the River Edge in Burley.

Tennis Matches include Minico at Canyon Ridge, Burley to Mountain home, Gooding to Jerome and Wood River will be at Twin Falls.

The jury has been selected for the murder trial of Lori Vallow Daybell.  Today, the jury consisting of 10 men and 8 women include 6 alternates will be part of the trial that’s expected to last 8 weeks.  Her husband Chad Daybell is also charged with murder and will be tried separately in Ada County.

A man who Nampa Police say advertised illegal drugs on social media is now in jail, facing several felony charges.  Officers arrested 19-year-old Juan D. Zavala after executing a search warrant.  Officers located marijuana, THC cartridges, cocaine, mushrooms, and firearms, including a stolen AK-47 rifle.

The former embattled Boise police chief appears to be in line to become the next Pittsburgh police chief.  Ryan Lee spent years with the Portland, Oregon department before becoming the chief in Boise.  However, while he was chief, Lee allegedly broke a sergeant’s neck during a tactical demonstration.

A McCall man is going to prison and is banned from National Forest System lands after he illegally cut down trees.  McCall resident Richard Russell Kersten was sentenced to one month in federal prison for illegally harvesting timber from the Payette, Nez Perce, and Boise National Forests. Kersten was also banned from entering all National Forest System lands for three years and was ordered to pay the government $8,000 in restitution.

Three men are in custody for charges of trafficking following a traffic stop on Hwy 93.  25 year old Wilson Fontes Mendvil of Mexico, 23 year old Elton Loza and 24 year old Hugo Hector Olvera, also of Arizona, are being held on the charges of Drug Trafficking in Methamphetamine, and Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Deliver fentanyl.  26 pounds of Meth and 4.6 pounds of fentanyl were recovered with a street value of 1 million dollars.  That’s about a million lethal doses of fentanyl. 

Starting this morning, Idaho Power is replacing existing underground electric cable in the area of Falls Avenue West between Monroe Street and Madrona Street as well as adjacent cross streets to improve reliability in areas that are experiencing issues.  Working hours will be between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

SPORTS

The University of Idaho and longtime women’s basketball coach Jon Newlee is leaving the school.  Athletic director Terry Gawlik said that the decision was mutual. Newlee spent 15 seasons with the Vandals.  A national search for the next Idaho Women’s Basketball coach will begin immediately.

 

Make it eight wins in a row for the College of Southern Idaho softball team.  CSI's Josh Trentadue - baseball and Gracie Walters - softball have dominated the Scenic West Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week awards.  Meanwhile, the CSI baseball team suffered a pair of losses against Utah State Eastern University on Saturday.  The two teams will head to Twin Falls to play four more games to start the week. Doubleheaders are scheduled for today at noon and tomorrow at 11 am at Skip Walker Field.

 

In high school baseball games on Saturday,   from the 28th annual Buhl Mid-Season Classic Tournament it was Buhl 13 over Bear Lake 0.  Sugar Salem defeated American Falls 6 to 3.  Then American Falls downed Teton 15 to 1.  Sugar Salem took the win over Buhl 15 to 3.  It was Kimberly 9 Teton 1.  Wood River took the win over South Fremont 9 to 3.  Wood River downed Bear Lake 7 to 2.  Kimberly defeated South Fremont 13 to 3.  In other games, in a double header Twin Falls took the win in the first game 14 to 4.  Mountain View took the win in the second game 4 to 3. 

 

From the 15th annual Lady Dawg Spring softball classic Kimberly, McCall-Donnelly for the win over Teton 8 to 7.  Kimberly downed Declo 10 to 3.  Wood River 9 Over North Fremont 18 to 2.  Filer defeated Sugar Salem 5 to 4.  Buhl outlasted South Fremont 4 to 1.  It was Sugar Salem 16 to McCall Donnelly 1 and Wood River defeated Declo 13 to 4.

WARMING TEMPERATURES WILL RESULT IN INCREASED SNOW MELT AND SIGNIFICANT RIVER, STREAM AND CREEK RISES.  Temperatures will warm significantly over the next several days and snow melt to the existing snowpack will increase. This will cause increased flows and significant rises on area rivers, streams and creeks over the next several days. Low lying or poor drainage areas with existing snowpack could see minor sheet flooding over the next week.  Some rivers, streams, and creeks could approach bankfull as a result of this weather pattern but no flooding is expected at this time.

On the final day of the 2023 session, the Idaho House of Representatives narrowly failed to override Gov. Brad Little’s veto of a controversial bill that would have prohibited libraries from providing “harmful materials” to minors.  On Wednesday, Little vetoed House Bill 314, writing in a letter to legislators that the bill’s ambiguity would lead to unintended consequences for libraries and their patrons.

The trial for Murder suspect Lori Vallow Daybell is moving forward as opening arguments are scheduled for Monday in the case.  There have been 42 potential jurors selected in order to start the striking process.  The judge has ruled that Kay Woodcock can represent her grandson JJ Vallow in the courtroom.  Vallow Daybell’s sister Summer Shiflet was appointed an advocate for Tylee Ryan.

Police will be increasing patrols this weekend in southern Idaho looking for distracted drivers.  According to the ISP in 2021, Idaho had 5,003 distracted driving crashes, including 30 fatalities and 284 serious injuries.

Gas prices are surging across the country, but Idaho drivers aren’t feeling the pain at least, for now.  According to AAA, the national average, which currently sits at $3.55 for a gallon of regular, is now slightly higher than Idaho’s state average of $3.54 per gallon the first time that’s been the case since January 23. 

Former Credit union teller Esmeralda De La Rosa is facing grand theft charges from Westmark Credit Union in Twin Falls after suspicious transactions totaling 13-thousand 700 were noted.  The 26 year old was terminated after working at the credit union for two years. 

Eight southern Idaho counties have signed a joint resolution opposing three wind energy projects proposed for public lands in the area.  At a ceremony yesterday at the Minidoka National Historic site, commissioners from Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Jerome, Minidoka and Twin Falls signed the document asking the Bureau of Land Management to select the No Build option for Lava Ridge and to pause the Salmon Falls and Taurus projects.  The Biden administration has prioritized permitting 25 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2025.

In local sports, first to the high school baseball diamonds, in a double header Wendell took the first game against Century 13 to 3.  Then Century took the second game 14 to 11.  Marsh Valley said no to Jerome 8 to 1.  Glenns Ferry shut out Wilder 13 to 0.  Minico took the win over Canyon Ridge 15 to 0.  It was Firth 7 Declo 2 and in a double header, Burley for the win in the first game over Mountain Home 6 to 1.  In the second game it was Mountain Home 12 Burley 7.

In softball games, Burley for the win over Preston 10 to 0.  Glenns Ferry 30 Wilder 11.  In a couple of double headers, Canyon Ridge defeated Minico in the first game 18 to 7.  Minico turned it around in the second game 15 to 14.  Twin Falls took the win in both of their games against Wood River 10 to 2 and 8 to 2.

On today’s schedule first for baseball, Wendell travels to Glenns Ferry.  It’s the 28th annual Buhl Mid-Season Classic Tournament in Buhl where South Fremont plays Buhl at 10.  At Noon Teton plays bear Lake, South Fremont Plays Bear Lake followed by Teton playing Buhl.

In Kimberly, American Falls plays Kimberly at 10.  Sugar Salem plays Wood River at noon.  American Falls plays Wood River at 2 followed by Sugar Salem playing Kimberly. 

On the softball Schedule, Homedale plays a double header in Mountain Home and Melba takes on Wendell.  It’s the 15th annual Lady Dawg spring classic in Kimberly where North Fremont will play Buhl at 10.  Filer plays South Fremont at noon, Kimberly plays Teton at 1:30, North Fremont takes on Declo at 3 and Kimberly will play Wood River at 5.

In field 2 in Kimberly, Declo plays McCall Donnelly at 10, Sugar Salem Plays Wood River at noon.  Sugar Salem then plays Buhl at 1:30.  South Fremont plays McCall Donnelly at 3 and Filer takes on Teton at 5. 

There are a couple of Track meets.  The Sun Valley Community school, Wood River, Mountain Home, Burley and Minico will participate  in the Tim Dunne meet in Jerome, also there is a Canyon Ridge meet.

There is a District 6 Rodeo in Filer today.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a bill into law yesterday that makes it illegal for an adult to help a minor get an abortion without parental consent.  The law is the first of its kind in the U.S. and creates a new crime of abortion trafficking, barring adults from obtaining abortion pills for a minor or transporting the pregnant minor without the consent of the minor’s parent or guardian.  Anyone convicted of breaking the law will face two to five years in prison.

Calling it a bounty on libraries, Idaho Gov. Brad Little vetoed a bill that would have prohibited libraries and schools from promoting or giving out materials that are “harmful to minors.”  It would have allowed a parent or legal guardian to sue a school or library for $2,500 in statutory damages.

Planned Parenthood Great Northwest has filed a federal lawsuit against Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador’s office following a legal opinion issued last week that stated medical professionals in Idaho could be subject to criminal penalties for referring patients to abortion care across state lines.  Labrador issued the legal opinion that states that the use of any means to carry out an abortion is prohibited.

A Richfield woman was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for stealing clients’ insurance premiums to pay her personal and business bills.  Charlotte Sheppard was sentenced to the Idaho Department of Corrections for 10 years, with five years fixed and five years indeterminate.  Sheppard was first prosecuted and found guilty in Blaine County for grand theft in 2020 after funds were reported missing from an insurance agency’s fiduciary account. 

The cold wet weather is slowing farmers from getting into the fields this  spring.  The crop progress report, released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said there was an average of 1.1 days suitable for fieldwork in Idaho for the week ending April 2, as cold temperatures affected farmers in Twin Falls and Cassia counties.  Farmers started working in sandier soils in Jerome County.

A 19 year old female from Parma died following a crash in canyon county yesterday morning.  Police say she failed to stop at an intersection.

SPORTS

The college of southern Idaho Golden Eagles Baseball team has a busy few days.  They will  play 12 games in 9 days.  The Golden Eagles will play their regularly-scheduled four-game series at Utah State-Eastern tomorrow and Saturday.  Then Monday and Tuesday, they will host Utah State-Eastern in a four-game series, making up the matchups canceled in early March.  The following Friday and Saturday, the Golden Eagles will host Scenic West-leading Southern Nevada.  CSI sits at 20-8 overall but just 4-8 in conference play.

To the high school baseball game from yesterday, Twin Falls downed Wood River 11 to 1.  In softball action, Gooding defeated Filer 5 to 2.  Kimberly said no to Buhl 14 to 1 and Wendell outlasted Declo 5 to 2.

On todays schedule, Marsh Valley travels to Jerome.  Wilder goes to Glenns Ferry Minico to canyon Ridge, Firth to Declo and there are a couple of double headers on the schedule: Mountain Home at Burley and Wendell at Century.

For Softball, Preston will be in Burley, Glenns Ferry plays Wilder and double headers include Canyon Ridge at Minico and Wood River in Twin Falls.

On the track schedule, Filer, Wendell, Declo, Gooding, Buhl and Kimberly will participate in the Angie Wyatt in Filer.  Glenns Ferry, Shoshone, Hansen, Lighthouse Christian and Camas County will be part of the Jennifer Crystal Invite in Murtaugh.  Wood River will travel to Mountain Home.
