A Burley neighborhood was evacuated yesterday afternoon when a gas line was struck during by construction work on Bedke Boulevard. Officials began evacuating the area. At last check the 500 block of Oakley Avenue and Miller Avenue remains closed.
A Burley family posted on social media yesterday a break-in at their home that could have gone very bad. One homeowner was home when their dogs began to bark. The husband texted his wife that someone was breaking in after being alerted by the front door camera. Authorities arrested 28 year old Briayan Vergara who faces a long list of charges including rape, kidnapping, battery, aggravated assault resisting arrest and three counts of burglary.
Twin Falls police are searching for a man wanted in the robbery of Walgreens on Washington Street North. Police say it happened just before 8:30 last night. The suspect wasn’t armed at the time and is possibly a former employee.
After police shot and killed a man on Interstate 84 last week, a deputy remains in the hospital after being stabbed by the suspect and shot by fellow deputies. 40-year-old Jared Decker pulled a deputy to the ground and stabbed him multiple times. Two other deputies then shot and killed Decker. Durring the gunfight, deputies not only killed Decker, but shot their colleague in the leg. The bullet wound does not appear to be significant but that the stab wounds will result in long-term recovery.
The Minidoka County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said police will not face any charges following the shooting of Arlo Dillon Campbell that happened near Hazelton. Authorities say the suspect shot at the police and threw homemade explosive devices at officers before he was killed by deputies.
Two men from southern Idaho have been sentenced to federal prison in two separate drug trafficking cases. 65 year old Steven Feller of Kuna was sentenced to 114 months in federal prison. He was convicted of possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine. 42 year old Lawrence Eric Barns of Twin Falls was sentenced to 160 months in federal prison for possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl with the intent to distribute.

Idaho Fish and Game and the BLM are hoping you will help plant sagebrush to rehabilitate winter big-game habitat burned by the Badger Fire, which scorched the South Hills in 2020. The planting will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Earth Day tomorrow in the Dry Creek area directly south of Hansen. Volunteers will meet up with Fish and Game staff at the mouth of Dry Creek Road at 8:30 a.m.
From the baseball diamonds yesterday, Twin Falls defeated Mountain Home in a double header. In game one the score was 8 to 0. In the second game it was 7 to 5. Buhl took the first game in a double header over Kimberly 7 to 5. In the second game, Kimberly took the win 7 to 4.
In softball action, Buhl defeated Kimberly 3 to 1 in a double header then Kimberly for the win over Buhl 8 to 2. Jerome outlasted Burley in both of their games against Burley 8 to 7 and 10 to 8.
On today’s baseball schedule, Burley heads to Jerome, Gooding will play Cole Valley in Meridian and Wendell travels to Declo.
On the Softball schedule Lighthouse will travel to play Greenleaf Friends, Wood River goes to Minico and Kimberly to Weiser. Both of those games are double headers. Wendell and Declo will participate in the Scott Ray Malad Tournament. Declo plays Malad, followed by Wendell taking on American Falls. Then Wendell plays West Side while Declo takes on West Jefferson.

A confrontation between a counter-protester, a security guard and attendees at Boise Pride on September 10th spawned two different legal claims alleging negligence from the City of Boise and the Boise Police Department. One, from Pride counter-protester Martin Bettwieser and the other from Charles Rehdorf, a private security guard hired by Boise Pride. Rehdorf’s claim says an incident starting with a protester displaying anti-Pride signs during the event and ending with Rehdorf being charged with a misdemeanor battery and use of force charge for restraining Bettwieser was the result of negligence from the Boise Police Department.
Kroger wants a judge to throw out a lawsuit from a group of consumers looking to derail its bid to buy Boise-based Albertsons. Attorneys said the consumers’ group doesn’t have legal standing to bring the suit, and said the Clayton Act does not “turn every grocery store consumer in the country into a roving antitrust enforcer.”
Scoular will break ground this month on a $20 million expansion of its feed blending facility in Jerome to meet the custom feed needs of the region’s dairy and beef producers. In its April 12 announcement, Scoular said the expansion, which is aiming for a spring 2024 completion, adds two key capabilities: A steamflaking process, which processes corn into flakes and A pellet mill to make feed pellets.
The city of Twin Falls is warning area residents of an increasing amount of Teenagers and young adults being targeted by Sextortion. The city issued a news release reminding parents to talk to their teens about online relationships and to maintain healthy communication with their children.
Idaho Governor Brad Little said that he does not anticipate a special legislative session happening after Republican and Democratic party leaders recently raised concerns about a new law that eliminates the March presidential primary election. Little signed the bill into law on March 30. Some say the elimination of the March election is the result of rushing legislation without building consensus and support.

The Boise States men’s tennis program has been hit with a series of penalties, including two years of probation and a $5,000 fine for violating NCAA recruiting rules. In January of 2021, the head coach of the Boise State men’s tennis team, Kristian Widen, resigned. Over a year later, the NCAA says an assistant coach on Widen's staff engaged in a “series of impermissible recruiting activities.” The NCAA report said Widen violated his responsibility as a head coach by “failing to demonstrate that he monitored his assistant coach.” The NCCAA report does not name the assistant coach, but Boise State says the assistant at that time was Ali Borhani. Boise State is not challenging the violations.

Idaho’s largest electricity provider is taking steps to provide clean energy resources for the next 20 years, with one of its recent projects expanding the state’s solar power usage. In January, Idaho Power began providing energy through the Jackpot Solar Project, a new solar facility based on 952 acres south of Twin Falls. The project is the largest solar facility in operation in Idaho and is estimated to provide energy to roughly 24,000 homes.
Boise Police have arrested a man employed as a teacher and coach at Fairmont Junior High School on suspicion of felony sex crimes, including at least one against a minor. 59 year old Eric Mcdermott, was booked into the Ada County Jail.
Charges against the woman detained in connection to the case of Michael Vaughan of Fruitland have been dropped. Sarah Wondra had been charged with failure to notify the police of a death. Officials spent more than a week excavating Wondra's backyard. Investigators said they were confident Vaughan's remains would be found on the property. None were found.
The man accused of murdering a couple in New Meadows on October 1, 2022, was found competent and will finally be in court again this week. John Cody Hart is accused of shooting and killing Rory and Sara Mehen at the hotel they owned in New Meadows, the Hartland Inn. Investigators said he was a guest at the time. His preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 this morning.
Some progressives and conservatives alike are raising concerns about a new Idaho law from the recent legislative session that eliminates the state’s March presidential primary election. The Idaho Legislature passed the bill, as a way to consolidate elections and save the state about $2.7 million every four years. Some say the May primary wasn’t added to the books.
An Idaho judge issued a civil arrest warrant yesterday for Ammon Bundy, after he repeatedly failed to appear in court or respond to a lawsuit filed by St. Luke’s. Protests over the hospitalization of a baby last year resulted in a lockdown. Gem County Sheriff Donnie Wunder said Bundy, who lives in Emmett, is becoming more and more aggressive and does not want to risk harm over a civil issue.

The man police were searching for in the shooting and death of Nyssa Police reserve officer Joseph Johnson Saturday night has been arrested. 36 year old Rene Castro was captured at a home in Ontario Oregon. The district attorney made the announcement around 9 am yesterday.
A 52 year old man from Filer was airlifted for medical treatment after he lost control of his pickup on I-84 yesterday afternoon just before 1pm. The accident occurred in the eastbound lane of travel near the Ridgeway Exit.
Power bills will be going up if the Idaho Public Utilities commission approves a rate hike. Idaho Power has requested an increase that would result in an average bill going up just under 13-dollars a month.
The 22 year old Jerome woman who was accused of hitting an ISP trooper last year while police were on scene of a vehicle fire has admitted to her guilt. Emina Hukic will be sentenced June 28th. She faces up to a $2000 fine and a year in jail. Trooper Mike Windler remains in fulltime rehab according to a facebook post.
Farmers and ranchers in Idaho still have time to be counted in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Although the original deadline for the agricultural census passed on Feb. 6, the statistics service will continue to accept completed census questionnaires throughout this spring.
Those who live within the City of Burley will have the opportunity to vote on a Burley Public Library levy on May 16th. The Library is asking voters to decide on a 2 year levy for 350 thousand dollars a year. That’s an increase of 72-thousand 720 dollars per year over the levy approved in 2021. The estimated annual cost for taxpayers is $21.88 per $100,000 assessed tax value.
Oil prices are at the highest level thus far this year at $83 per AAA says the average price for a gallon of regular in Idaho is $3.57, which is three cents more than a week ago but seven cents less than a month ago. Meanwhile, the national average is a dime more expensive at $3.67 per gallon.

This morning authorities are looking for a man they believe shot and killed an eastern Oregon reserve police officer. 43 year old Nyssa officer Joseph Johnson died Saturday night after a man he had pursued in a car shot at him. Johnson had been responding to reports the man was making threats and damaging property.
As you prepare for your commute this morning, know that the City of Burley will be starting construction on Bedke Boulevard from Overland Avenue to West Main Street near Bobcat Corner. This roadway will be closed to all traffic through the middle of June.
For those who cannot file their taxes by the tomorrow’s deadline, the Idaho State Tax Commission also offers an automatic six-month extension if you pay enough of your total tax by the deadline. To qualify, you must pay 80% of the estimated tax owed in 2022 or 100% of the total tax reported on your 2021 tax return.
The City of Twin Falls will begin receiving water from the Twin Falls Canal Company for Pressurized Irrigation today. All subdivisions are expected to be receiving Pressurized Irrigation by Friday, May 5.

Week one of the Lori Vallow Daybell murder trial ended Friday. The court will resume tomorrow. Lori is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of her two children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan.
A white SUV crashed into a Pocatello Fire Truck on Sunday afternoon while the Engine was responding to a fire. One occupant in the SUV had to be extricated, and all passengers vehicle were transported to a nearby hospital. The three firefighters driving the Engine are under evaluation by medical personnel. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene.

As the murder trial continues in Boise, Lori Vallow watched her former friend Melanie Gibb on the witness stand yesterday, as Gibb told the jury Vallow genuinely believed the people in her life had turned to zombies and were "possessed." Gibb and Vallow became fast friends in 2018 in Arizona after meeting at a church event. But once Vallow met Chad Daybell Gibb said she changed. She would parrot Daybell's teachings and insert them into her own life.
In the final days of the 2023 Idaho legislative session, colleges and universities received $72.9 million for building projects. But the money will leave some work unfunded — and leave the colleges and universities scurrying to cover their remaining costs. The whole process began in January, when Gov. Brad Little requested $109.9 million for higher ed capital projects. Boise state was approved for 17.9 Million. College of Western Idaho will get 15.7 Million. CSI 11.5 million. U of I 8.99 Million. ISU 8.3 Million. College of Eastern Idaho 8 Million. Lewis-Clark 2.3 Million. No money was approved for North Idaho College.
Today is purple day in honor of Military Children. It’s part of the month of the military child in Idaho. Purple is the combined color of all military branches.
Record-breaking March snowfall has led to deep southern Idaho snowpacks and a more optimistic water supply outlook than a year ago for water users. However, all that snow means officials are preparing for the potential for high waters and flooding as temperatures warm and the snowpack melts. Some snowpack levels have broken the records this year.
Police and school district officials in Twin Falls are investigating a bullying incident that occurred Wednesday off school grounds. Disturbing video of the incident was circulating on social media. School officials say those involved could face suspension and expulsion. On a post police say they were aware of the images and are investigating.
The Sawtooth National Forest mourns the loss of District Ranger Marty Gmelin. He passed away Saturday from injuries he sustained during a snow-tubing accident. Gmeline just celebrated 30 years of federal service, first coming to work at the Sawtooth National Forest in 1995. He led the Fairfield district since 2020.
